Why I Started This Blog
From a young age, I've always felt the pull to put my ideas into words. I believe in the power of writing not only to clarify one's own thoughts but also to invite others into creative, constructive dialogue.
Yet not every idea needs the spotlight. Some are better left as notebook scribbles or private drafts. I want to give ideas time to develop before deciding which ones are ready for discussion.
Embracing the Age of Silicon-Based Intelligence
Large language models such as GPT-3 and GPT-4 have changed how we work and communicate. They can compress tasks that once took hours, but they also raise a question: are we losing some of our ability to think deeply for ourselves?
I've noticed that my own writing, whether code or prose, can too easily become augmented (or replaced) by AI-generated suggestions. On one hand, these models can help structure my ideas; on the other, I might be tempted to default to their logic instead of practicing and refining my own reasoning skills.
Intentional Creativity in a Digital World
I've started thinking about how to be more intentional with writing, especially when a keyboard shortcut can produce a near-limitless stream of AI suggestions. Here are some questions I'm using:
- What is the core idea? – Before letting AI shape my thoughts, I try to articulate my central thesis in my own words.
- Who benefits from it? – Am I writing to inform, inspire, or solve a problem for someone?
- What tools are most helpful? – Sometimes a pen and paper is more conducive to clarity than a sleek AI dashboard.
- When do I press 'publish'? – Is the piece thoughtful and refined, or does it need more time to develop?
- How do I stay authentic? – Even if AI helps me polish my words, I strive to keep my own "voice" front and center.
These questions help me use technology without letting it crowd out my own perspective.
The Importance of Autonomy
When we train AI models, we expose them to massive datasets, often curated by large technology companies. Those choices shape how a model responds. Its output is still bounded by the quality and scope of the data it receives.
For us as creators, this raises important ethical and practical questions:
- Whose data is being used? If it's controlled by a few large entities, how does that shape the model's worldview?
- How do we maintain our originality? If we rely too heavily on AI-generated ideas or text, do we lose our unique voice or perspective?
- Where should we draw the line? Technology can be a powerful ally, but our capacity for critical thinking and personal judgment remains essential.
The point is not to reject AI. It is to use it in ways that support our judgment rather than replace it.
